BOE Technology Group and Visionox have moved ultra-thin glass (UTG) cover panels below 20 microns into volume production for foldable smartphone displays, narrowing a manufacturing gap that has kept Samsung Display in effective control of the foldable panel market since it commercialized the first UTG cover for the Galaxy Z Flip in 2020. Supply chain filings and component orders tracked through August show BOE's B12 fab in Chengdu and Visionox's Hebei line both shipping UTG modules at 15-to-18-micron thickness in commercial volumes for the first time, down from the 30-micron-plus glass that limited earlier Chinese foldables to thicker, heavier hinge assemblies.
The crease problem that defined the market
Foldable OLED durability has come down to three linked variables: how thin the cover layer can go without cracking under repeated folds, how the panel's polyimide substrate resists forming a permanent crease at the fold line, and how the laser-cutting process that shapes the glass avoids introducing microfractures. Samsung Display solved the combination years before its Chinese rivals by co-developing UTG chemistry with Dowoo Insys and refining a proprietary lamination process across seven Galaxy Fold and Flip generations. That lead translated directly into supply contracts: Samsung Display has supplied close to 60 percent of foldable OLED panels sold globally in each of the past three years, according to shipment data compiled by trade publications tracking the category.
The crease itself remained the harder problem. Early BOE and Visionox foldables, including panels supplied to Honor's Magic V series and Huawei's Mate X line, showed a visible fold-line depression after roughly 100,000 to 150,000 open-close cycles in third-party durability testing, compared with Samsung's panels holding a comparably flat surface past 200,000 cycles. Closing that gap required both thinner glass, which reduces the tensile stress concentrated at the fold, and a redesigned hinge geometry that spreads the bend radius over a wider arc rather than a tight V.
Chinese panel makers close the distance
BOE's sub-18-micron UTG, branded internally as the B12 "Diamond Fold" line, pairs the thinner glass with a new flexible polyimide layer developed with domestic materials supplier Kingfa. Visionox has taken a parallel path, licensing laser-cutting equipment from Germany's Schott and pairing it with its own hinge-integrated lamination process at the Hebei plant. Both companies have told component buyers they expect fold-cycle ratings in the 300,000-to-350,000 range for panels shipping in the fourth quarter of 2026, which would put them at parity with or ahead of Samsung Display's current generation for the first time.
The shift is showing up in orders. Honor has confirmed BOE as the sole panel supplier for its next book-style foldable, dropping the dual-sourcing arrangement with Samsung Display it used for the Magic V3. Xiaomi has qualified Visionox panels alongside its existing Samsung Display allocation for the Mix Fold 5, a hedge that lets it negotiate pricing on both sides. Huawei, which has sourced foldable panels almost exclusively from BOE since 2023 as part of its broader push toward domestic component supply chains, is expected to extend that arrangement through its next Mate X generation.
What thinner glass means for device design
The immediate effect for OEMs is weight and hinge cost. A UTG layer below 18 microns allows for a tighter hinge stack, which BOE says can cut total device thickness by roughly 0.4 millimeters when folded and shave 8 to 12 grams off overall weight compared with 2024-generation panels using 30-micron glass. That matters most for book-style foldables competing against slab phones on portability, a segment where Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold has faced years of criticism for being noticeably thicker and heavier than a conventional flagship. Chinese OEMs shipping thinner panels first could flip that comparison in their favor for the 2026 holiday cycle.
Cost is the other lever. UTG has historically carried a steep yield penalty — cutting glass this thin without cracking it produces significant scrap at the fab level, which is part of why foldable panels have carried a bill-of-materials premium of $150 to $200 over flat OLED panels of comparable size. BOE executives told component distributors in July that yield on the sub-18-micron line had crossed 75 percent, up from below 50 percent a year earlier, a jump that would materially narrow the cost gap with Samsung Display's more mature process.
Samsung Display's response
Samsung Display has not stood still. The company has told suppliers it is moving its own next-generation UTG, targeting 12 microns, into pilot production at its Asan campus, alongside a hinge design intended for a tri-fold form factor expected to ship on the Galaxy Z TriFold in the second half of 2026. Samsung retains an edge in one area Chinese suppliers have not yet matched: anti-reflective and anti-fingerprint coating layers applied directly to the UTG surface, a step that has required additional licensing from Japanese materials suppliers that BOE and Visionox have only recently begun securing.
LG Display, the smaller of the two Korean suppliers in the foldable segment, has largely ceded ground in cover glass innovation and instead concentrated on plastic OLED substrates for lower-cost foldables sold through its remaining smartphone-adjacent contracts. Its share of the foldable panel market has fallen to roughly 8 percent, down from close to 15 percent in 2023, as both the premium and value tiers have consolidated around Samsung Display at the top and BOE and Visionox in the middle.
Market share implications
Display research firms tracking the segment estimate Samsung Display's share of global foldable OLED shipments could fall from around 58 percent in 2025 to the low 40s by the end of 2027 if BOE and Visionox sustain current yield and durability trajectories, with the difference absorbed almost entirely by Chinese suppliers rather than LG Display. The shift mirrors a pattern already visible in rigid and flexible OLED for bar-style phones, where BOE overtook Samsung Display on total shipment volume in 2023 even as Samsung retained the premium segment on quality metrics. Whether the same trajectory repeats in foldables now depends less on manufacturing capacity, where Chinese fabs have already scaled, and more on whether BOE and Visionox can hold fold-cycle durability steady across mass production rather than in curated samples shown to component buyers.
