Laptop makers across Taiwan, South Korea and China are shipping on-device AI processing as a standard specification rather than a premium upsell, following the industry-wide adoption of neural processing units (NPUs) capable of at least 40 trillion operations per second (TOPS) — the threshold Microsoft set in 2024 for its Copilot+ PC certification. Across the region's electronics supply chain, the shift touches chip design, contract manufacturing schedules and component sourcing.

Qualcomm's Snapdragon X series, Intel's Core Ultra 200V "Lunar Lake" and its successor "Panther Lake," and AMD's Ryzen AI 300 series all integrate NPUs that clear the 40-TOPS bar. Built around these chips, ASUS, Acer and MSI in Taiwan, Samsung's Galaxy Book line in South Korea, and Lenovo's Yoga and ThinkPad AI models out of China now list the NPU specification alongside CPU and RAM on retail pages, a placement previously reserved for graphics chips.

The 40-TOPS Threshold Reshapes Product Lines

Before 2024, "AI features" on a laptop typically meant software running in the cloud, with a webcam-facing chatbot or a photo-editing filter calling out to a remote server. The Copilot+ PC requirement changed that by tying the AI label to a hardware floor: no dedicated NPU above 40 TOPS, no Copilot+ badge, no eligibility for the on-device features Microsoft reserves for the tier, such as offline image generation and live caption translation.

That hardware floor forced a redesign cycle. Chipmakers had to fit NPU silicon into the same thermal and power envelope as existing ultrabook processors, and laptop brands had to requalify motherboards and cooling systems around chips that draw power differently than prior generations. Taiwan's PC brands, which compete on thin-and-light form factors more than any other regional market, absorbed most of that redesign cost first.

Taiwan's Contract Manufacturers Retool Assembly Lines

Quanta, Compal, Wistron and Pegatron — the four Taiwanese ODMs that assemble the majority of the world's Windows laptops on contract for global brands — have spent the past two years converting production lines to the new chip packages. Because these firms build for Dell, HP and Lenovo alongside Taiwan's own brands, a single line retooling decision now ripples across multiple customers at once rather than one company's product range.

Acer and ASUS, both headquartered in Taipei, have pushed the NPU spec down into their mid-range lines faster than premium-tier rivals elsewhere, partly because their manufacturing partners already sit a few kilometers away rather than across an ocean. Historically a gaming-laptop specialist, MSI has added NPU-equipped models to non-gaming ranges for the first time, treating on-device AI as a mainstream feature rather than a gaming-adjacent one.

China's Parallel Track

China's laptop market is following a separate hardware path. Because US export restrictions limit which Qualcomm, Intel and AMD chips domestic brands can source, Lenovo, Honor and Huawei have leaned on a mix of licensed Western silicon for international models and homegrown NPU designs for the domestic market. Huawei's MateBook line, built around Kirin and Ascend-derived silicon rather than Qualcomm or Intel parts, runs its on-device AI features through HarmonyOS rather than Windows Copilot+, splitting the region's software ecosystem along the same lines already visible in Huawei's smartphone business.

Rather than branding a distinct product tier the way Copilot+ does, Xiaomi and Honor have taken a narrower approach, adding NPU-accelerated features — real-time translation, background removal in video calls, local document summarization — to existing Windows laptop lines. The functional overlap with Taiwanese and Korean competitors is close even where the marketing language and underlying silicon differ.

Memory and Packaging Demand Follows the Chips

Since on-device AI models load weights into RAM rather than streaming them from a remote server, NPU-equipped laptops generally need more memory bandwidth than earlier ultrabook designs. South Korea's SK Hynix and Samsung, which together supply most of the world's laptop-grade DRAM and NAND flash, have both added LPDDR5X capacity aimed at AI PC demand rather than smartphone or server customers, splitting product roadmaps that used to serve all three markets with the same memory dies.

As AI PC volumes rise, component distributors in Taiwan and South Korea report that memory allocation for laptop-grade parts has tightened, a knock-on effect similar to the memory shortages that hit the smartphone and server markets during earlier AI hardware cycles. Laptop brands sourcing DRAM now compete more directly with data-center customers for the same fabrication capacity than they did before NPU-equipped designs became standard.

Software Certification Still Trails Hardware Rollout

Hardware has moved faster than the software ecosystem built to use it. Even on laptops with certified NPUs sitting idle in the chassis, most productivity and creative applications sold in East Asia still route AI features to cloud servers by default. Adobe, Microsoft and a handful of regional software vendors have begun shipping NPU-accelerated versions of specific tools, but broad third-party adoption across the software catalog that ships with a typical East Asian retail laptop remains uneven, brand by brand and application by application.
