KakaoTalk Gets an AI Upgrade

Kakao Corporation has integrated an AI assistant directly into KakaoTalk, South Korea's dominant messaging platform with 48 million monthly active users. The assistant, called Kanly AI, is powered by Kakao's custom-built KoGPT large language model and can be invoked within any chat conversation using the @ mention command.

Kakao CEO Hong Eun-taek said the integration "brings AI to where Koreans already spend their time — inside KakaoTalk." He noted that 94% of South Korean smartphone users have KakaoTalk installed, giving the AI assistant an immediate distribution advantage over standalone AI apps.

Key Features

Kanly AI offers four core capabilities at launch: group chat summarization, real-time message translation (supporting Korean, English, Japanese, and Chinese), restaurant and business recommendations linked to KakaoMap data, and schedule coordination that syncs with KakaoTalk's built-in calendar feature.

The chat summarization feature has generated the most user interest. In group chats with hundreds of unread messages — common in Korean workplace culture — Kanly AI can generate a concise summary of key topics, decisions, and action items. During beta testing, users rated the summaries as "useful" or "very useful" 78% of the time.

Privacy Architecture

Message privacy is a sensitive topic in South Korea, where KakaoTalk is used for everything from personal conversations to business communications. Kakao emphasized that Kanly AI processes messages only when explicitly invoked by a user and does not store conversation data beyond the active session.

The Korea Internet and Security Agency reviewed Kakao's AI privacy architecture and confirmed it complies with the Personal Information Protection Act. Users can opt out of AI features entirely through the app settings.

Monetization Strategy

Kanly AI is free for basic features during the launch period, with premium capabilities — including longer conversation context and advanced analysis — planned for a subscription tier at 4,900 won ($3.60) per month. Kakao also plans to monetize through AI-powered business tools, allowing merchants on KakaoTalk Channels to use AI for customer service automation.

Analysts at Samsung Securities said the AI integration "could stabilize KakaoTalk's engagement metrics, which have been flat for two years, and open new revenue streams that justify Kakao's significant AI investment." Kakao has invested approximately 1.5 trillion won in AI development since 2022.
